A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR FRONT-END PROCESS IMPLEMENTATION FOR SMEs

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework for front-end process implementation in small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) taking into consideration their characteristics. The proposed framework described in this paper encompasses two main elements: the “foundation elements” and “general methodology”. In order to ensure success, SMEs need to fundamentally understand the implementation of NPD process within SMEs context, rather than fitting large organizational practice. Current frameworks for front-end implementation process have been developed however some of the frameworks unaware with the characteristics of SMEs which are constraint by knowledge, skills and resources (e.g.: financial, technological, human and time). The first part of this paper elaborates front-end process definition and background. The next part focuses on differences in characteristics between large organizations and SMEs with respect to front-end implementation. Later it followed by comparing and revising some existing frameworks found in the literature. The proposed conceptual framework is believed to be applicable and suitable for SMEs. SMEs are chosen because they played a major role in the development of Malaysian economy. In other words by improving SMEs business process the resultant effect on the overall Malaysian economy will be very significant.
